GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:

Performs technical/analytical work establishing and maintaining a wide variety of computer technology services related to the overall operation of the RSW Regional Jail. Performs all other duties as assigned. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Support Services Captain.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

Establish, maintain and manage all technology related software and hardware.

  • Serves as Facility Systems IT Technician to install, configure, and maintain the RSW Regional Jail facility hardware and software;
  • Coordinates technology acquisitions including repairs and replacements;
  • Works and maintains business relationships with vendors and suppliers to implement new IT projects;
  • Communicates effectively and clearly with all levels of the organization.
  • Responsible for troubleshooting and providing appropriate assistance to users encountering technical problems, including computer (s) network problems (to include after regular business hours).
  • Operational readiness of multiple technological systems including electronic security, access controls, video monitoring, data storage, recovery, servers, imaging systems, communication devices, video visitation, and inmate telephones;
  • Assisting with acquisitions, telecommunications, video conferencing, radio communications, Jail Management and Card Reader Systems;
  • Responsible for installation, repair, and replacement of computers, printers, phones, jail issued cell phones, watch tour system and any other IT systems as needed;
  • Researches procurement resources, recommends and advises on best solutions for plans to install, configure, troubleshoot, and upgrade general and specialized operating systems to meet RSW Regional Jail standards or other requirements;
    • Prepares and presents reports periodically on project status to superiors; oversees and/or prepares major project management documents;
    • Practical knowledge of project management processes and the ability to apply tools and techniques to lead and execute projects successfully;
    • Loads and updates software applications to the operating system as required;
    • Establishes and maintains network users, user environment, directories and security;
    • Maintains a backup of all files, security and rights;
    • Performs all duties in compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and RSW Regional Jail Policy and Procedures;
    • Performs other related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Possess high moral and ethical standards in regards to privacy of secure information in the workplace; thorough knowledge of all Windows operating systems including Server 2008, 2003, Linux, Windows 7 and 8 and Microsoft Office Suite; strong knowledge of server hardware and software to be able to make recommendations on upgrade, improvements and maintenance; ability to develop technology standards, policies and procedures applicable to operations of the RSW Regional Jail; ability to establish and maintain working professional relationship with co-workers, officials, service providers and vendors; ability to organize, present ideas, recommendations, and convey complex issues in a way that is easy to understand; ability to multitask and prioritize work based upon the needs of the agency or as directed by Administration; possess excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to work after hours on an “as needed” basis; must be self –motivated and be able to work well independently and/or as a team member; and ability to establish and maintain First Aid, CPR and AED Certifications.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree or minimum two years of experience in related field required with considerable computer support experience. Experience utilizing modern technology in a Correctional setting preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, reaching, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; verbal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of verbal communication; hearing is required to perceive information at normal verbal communication levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.

SPECIAL SKILLS:

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
